I know that I am not the only one that is struggling with getting into the holiday spirit. I’ve seen so many Christmas lights since Halloween, but I guess I haven’t felt the vibes of the Christmas angel. One thing that I know for sure is 2017 moved faster than Usain Bolt.  I swear I was just watching the 2017 count down in New York City, like it was yesterday. I am quickly realizing that as I get older, time seems to move faster. I love Christmas time because my birthday is 2 days before Christmas. For me, that means double presents and since my parents are divorced, their partners always tend to slide in an extra gift for me. This year I will be turning 23 years old on the 23rd of December. This year is my golden year, so I know I am supposed to shine everyday of 2018. I have so much to be excited about this holiday season but I guess I need some more help. My Mom used to do these 4 things to jumpstart the holidays so I think I need to start them up again:

1) LISTEN TO THE JACKSON 5 CHRISTMAS ALBUM

My favorite thing to do is listen to Christmas music, even when it’s not Christmas. There is nothing like hearing little Michael Jackson sing ” Santa Clause is coming to town”. His voice was so perfect and infectious that the holiday bug has to bite you when you listen to this album.

2) EAT PANETTONE: THE ITALIAN CHRISTMAS CAKE

I’ve always loved Panettone Christmas cake ever since I was a little girl. I love bread and I love raisins, so to have a cake that kills two birds with one stone is a great feeling. The texture is fluffy and easy to pull apart. The smell is sweet, zesty and fruity. Lastly,  it can be purchased in your local grocery in a red box or SOMETIMES it is sold in Staples.

3) MAKE A GINGERBREAD HOUSE

Gingerbread cookies and houses are always a classic. If you’ve got some little ones in your household or family, it’s time to pull out the frosting and cookie cutters. When I used to make gingerbread houses with my mother, she always told me the importance of having and owning your own home. I feel like building a gingerbread house is a great way for children to learn about what they might want in their own home one day. Once you’re done and the children have gone to bed, you can eat it and throw it back with some spiked eggnog or rum punch.

4) DRINK JAMAICAN SORREL

Being a Jamerican, I’ve always celebrated my holidays with a glass of sorrel. It is a hibiscus drink that tastes great with white Jamaican rum. It has a sweet and savory taste that is divine. If you’re looking for a holiday drink that isn’t eggnog or a mixed cocktail, I suggest trying out some sorrel.

Earlier this year, I made a BIG change in my life, I went VEGETARIAN! I come from a big Jamaican family and it was hard for me to give up jerk chicken, oxtail, and chicken foot soup ( I know it sounds weird but it’s sooo yummy!). A majority of people usually transition into being vegetarian by gradually eliminating red meat, chicken and fish, but my journey was quite different. I have been allergic to seafood for a majority of my life so that was easy but eliminating meats was a whole other story.

In March, I traveled to Dakar, Senegal, which was an incredible experience (CLICK HERE to watch my vlog). A majority of the food I ate was meat and during my two week stay, my body was not responding well to it at all. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted wonderful but I rather have a clean and clear digestive system. After longs nights of sitting on the toilet, I decided it was time to change the way I eat.  Since June 2017, I have not had one slab of meat and it’s been one of the greatest decision I’ve made.

I like to call myself a vegetarian with vegan tendencies. I say that because I only drink almond or cashew milk and I don’t eat eggs. Sometimes I have my dairy days by releasing my stress with a big bowl of ice cream, but I try to be a good girl. One thing I do use that is 100% vegan is my Natural Finish Foundation from CoverFX. I guess since I was changing what goes into my body, I wanted to change what goes on it as well. First, I fell in love with the packaging. It’s large enough to last me a long time but it’s small enough for me to carry on the airplane. Second, the foundation keep my skin hydrated. I’ve tried a lot of foundations in the past and they dried out my skin. Lastly, it is a FULL coverage foundation. I know a lot of companies say full coverage and they’re not, but CoverFX did not lead me a stray. The foundation doesn’t just help cover my blemishes, but it heals them. If you’re looking for a change in your makeup, I suggest taking the first step with CoverFX.

For me, autumn is all about flannels, leggings, sweaters, and leathers. Feeling comfortable in my clothing is a must, especially when temperatures begin to drop. I REALLY love fall because sometimes you get sunny days with the perfect amount of breeze or a day that is overcast and at the peak of the day, the sun comes out. COMFORT is KEY and what is more comfortable than a chunky sweater? I’ll wait…. Haha, I’m just  pulling your leg. The best part about chunky sweaters are that they are very inexpensive. If you’re not try to spend cash, go look in your Mom’s closet or your Grandparents (you might find some vintage goodies). Also, you could go to your local thrift store or Goodwill and find one between $5- $10.
I remember back in high school, every girl used to wear chunky sweaters  with black leggings. Why? you might ask, because they were comfortable AF and they still are. Now that my style has evolved, I’m still wearing black leggings (LOL), but they have a twist to them. I recently got these really cool tie up leggings from Windsor Store with eyelet Screen Shot 2017-11-03 at 6.00.54 PMdecor. They are very comfortable and cute, but I don’t suggest wearing them when traveling. The last time I wore those bad boys, they let off the metal detector at TSA which was very annoying. They are perfect for a fro-yo run, going out, or lounging around the house. They can be paired with a chunky sweater or a flannel, like how I paired them in the photos below.

P.S. Don’t get comfortable in life, but when it comes to style comfortable is cute AF!

Growing up with a Mom who is a total diva, taught me the most important lesson about style, ” It’s not about how others feel about your style, it’s about how you feel about your style”. It was so cool seeing her in outrageous, fun, and daring outfit on and off the red carpet. One trait that I truly admire about my mother is her ability to make a statement. Yes, she always makes a statement in whatever she wears but she also makes a statement in the way she carries herself. Style is not just about the clothes we wear over our backs, it’s about how we choose to carry ourselves in those clothes. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I am talking about SWAG my friends! My Mom has a whole lot of swag and it’s because of the way she carries herself. She could enter a room wearing a trash bag and at least ten people would ask her “who is the designer?”. The first rule of style is believing in yourself. If you feel fabulous, you look fabulous.

Since my Mom is one of my favorite style icons, I find it imperative to raid her vintage closet every week. It’s so cool to find old pictures of her in the 80’s and then find the exact outfits she wore in those photos. I think she is a complete genius for saving all her outfits because just like history, fashion repeats itself. Most importantly, I’m just glad that I am able to wear them and they are in tip top condition. If you have a Mom that you know was slayinggggggg back in the day, I suggest you dive into the back of her closet and search for these 3 must have items…

Ever since I was 13, I’ve always had a problem with acne. It is something that I feel self conscious about, even till this day as a 22 year old. When I was in my freshman year of college, my mother took me to an amazing Beverly Hills dermatologist by the name of Dr. Susan Evans. She was able to get rid of my acne but I was still suffering from small dark marks and hyperpigmentation. For those of you who don’t know what hyperpigmentation is, it is ” a common, usually harmless condition in which patches of skin become darker in color than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin” (http://www.aocd.org). Now that I am a young adult, it’s time to say goodbye to those acne days  FOR GOOD and hello to clear skin.

Many people use chemical peels or other skin brightens to get rid of their dark marks, but I tried it before and I felt it was too harsh for my sensitive skin. I also started to realize that my skin was getting lighter. When I looked in the mirror, I felt as if my skin looked like I was bleaching it instead of brightening it. I was recently in Morocco and I had a minor break out. Some pimples left some scars and I began to freak out. I thank God that I had  my True Botancials skin care products with me because it made a drastic change in my skin.

My night routine that helped with the scarring, consisted of the hydrating cleanser, toner, cellular repair serum, and the vitamin C booster. The hydrating cleanser was able to fight any recurring acne and the cellular repair serum mixed with the vitamin C booster was able to battle the scars and minor marks.  The cellular repair serum  is ” a true force of nature that strengthens the barrier function in aging skin while fighting adult acne. “(True Botanicals). The vitamin C booster ” stimulates collagen production, firms and repairs skin, fights wrinkles, evens skin tone, brightens aging skin.” (True Botanicals). Lastly, at the end of my routine I used the toner to give my skin an even complexion. I highly recommend this routine if you are looking for products that are natural. I am trying to stay away from using too many chemicals on my face or body, so I feel that True Botanicals is a great substitute.
