Spring has sprung and summer is around the corner. This means that hair gets lighter, skin gets darker, and denim gets distressed. If your summer denim wardrobe doesn’t have any rips, tears, or bleach, it’s time for you to start shopping the Mahjing Wong Denimu Season 1 collection. If you don’t know already, Mahjing Wong was on Project Runway 15 and ripped his way into being a finalist. Wong is known for his innovative use of denim. This denim doyen knows how to mix and match different denim tones, but he also creates his own denim colors. As the saying goes “if they don’t have it, create it” (I think I made that up, LOL), and that is exactly what Wong does. The best thing about his garments are the construction. Wong knows how to construct denim to a tee. No matter if he is creating a skirt, dress, or trouser, he can make denim look sexy on any silhouette.

“Less is more” is the perfect way to describe spring’s hottest clothing line, Doyenne. Minimalist style is never boring, if you have the right pieces and accessories. Doyenne is a new clothing line and brand that is geared towards the spicy minimalist. We all have that one friend or is that one friend, who is très minimalistic but magnificent, all at the same time. Doyenne might be for minimalists, but there is nothing minimal about the brand. Each garment has unique detailing and named after fearless female figures. The wardrobe definitely speaks for itself, but so does the brand name. Doyenne is defined as a woman who is the most respected or prominent person in a particular field (Google), a.k.a., a woman who slays everyday and is at the top of her game. According to CEO, Anayka Pomare, the brand is dedicated to ” boss babes who make their own rules.” The Doyenne brand isn’t just about making people look good, but making people feel good. Doyenne is already turning heads at Coachella and making headlines.

When you first hear the word “curry”, I bet the lyrics ““I been Steph Curry with the shot, Been cookin’ with the sauce, chef, curry with the pot, boy” , from Drake’s o to 100 song , pops in your head. Along with thinking about Steph Curry, I also think about curry goat or curry chicken. As a Jamerican, curry based foods are a part of my life diet. Curry doesn’t just taste good, but it looks good. The gorgeous yellow and golden colors of curry stand out on any dish.
I recently went from eating curry to wearing curry. This fabulous color has been plastered all over Zara stores in New York City. My mother bought me a ruffled, 70’s styled curry colored dress and I fell in love. For me, yellow is just a little too bright for me, but curry is just right. It’s still a bright color without being phosphorescent. The color also evokes the emotions of hope and happiness. Since curry is in the same color family as yellow, the colors are a representation of enthusiasm for life, confidence, and inspiration. Curry and yellow are highly visible colors, which can boost ones ego and emphasize how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us.
Spring is right around the corner and I believe curry is the new black of the season. This is a color that knows how to make a statement. It looks great on every skin tone and has the ability to make you look good and feel good. Pop your head into your nearest Zara, Mango, or Banana Republic, just to see what type of curry they are stirring up in their spring collections.

Ballin’ on a budget is truly my speciality. I have a passion for inexpensive thrift shopping. I am addicted to one dollar flea markets and thrift stores. Two weeks ago, I went to a stadium flea market and I found a black leather beret for FIVE DOLLARS. I was so elated, I had to create a fun, fresh, and funky look that would look amazing with my new beret.
A week later, Paris Fashion Week began and one of Rihanna’s fashion statements was a black leather beret. I was so excited to know that RiRi and I were on the same page when it came to rocking berets. A beret is a perfect style accessory. During the civil rights era, many black panthers wore black berets as a symbol of empowerment, while they shouted “Black is beautiful”. I wear a black beret because it makes a great fashion statement, but it reminds me of my ancestors that fought for civil rights while making a fashion statement.
Paris Fashion Week runways have been flooded with berets, but to make a statement, you must wear the perfect outfit. I decided to pair my beret with a leather jacket, a graphic tee, leather pants (that I bought for five dollars), and leather black boots . I was going for the funky, trendy, but comfortable look. I made sure that my graphic tee said something profound. I bought my leather beret because I was inspired by the Black Panthers, so it was only right that my shirt said “the hardest job in America is being a Black woman”. I got this vintage tee from an amazing vintage store named ReboundNJ based in Paterson, NJ. Since, I was going for the black solidarity vibe, I wanted people to see and understand that I was making a political statement through my fashion.
There are multiple ways to style a beret, but I truly believe you must create a look that turns heads. It’s cute to wear it with jeans and t-shirt, but that is more of an “every day” look. When I find an accessory or garment that is striking and unique, I always dress it up because one specific part of a look can make or break an outfit. No matter how colorful or outlandishly your outfit may look, make sure that you are in love with it from head to toe. When you leave out your door everyday, make sure that you look good. In the words of Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, “it is best to be as pretty as possible for destiny”. You never know when you will have a date with destiny, so you must look the part at all times.

You’re probably thinking how the heck can you pair flannel with fur. Well, I’m here to show and tell you that it is possible. I enjoy wearing fur, but I only wear vintage fur (I don’t have anything to do with current animal cruelty). I feel like vintage fur is well done and took time to make, while modern day fur is processed so quickly. Also, when it comes to flannels, I usually buy they from a thrift store or flea market. The best looking flannels are the ones that have a worn out look. Fashion history has shown us that fur is more high end while plaid flannels are more on the casual side. That is exactly why I decided to bring the two together. Fashion stems from different cultural and financial backgrounds and it’s cool when they come together because that is how style is created.
I’ve never seen anyone rock a plaid flannel with fur , but it gave me a tomboy chic vibe. Pairing a flannel and some ripped jeans is an everyday look, but once the fur is added, it takes the look from casual to casual chic. If you really want to dress the look up, you can add cool funky sunglasses. The more daring you become with your wardrobe, the more you begin to turn heads. Thought provoking looks are always the ones that inspire others!
