Fall is my one of my favorite seasons because I can start drinking hot cocoa and I can bring out those fabulous coats that I’ve have been hiding in the back of my closet. I love a stylish coat that can keep me warm. Living in New York, it’s so imperative to have a coat that can do both: break necks and keep your body from freezing. The three main pieces of clothing that are important to me during the fall and winter are cashmere sweaters, black boots and once again, a durable coat.

Sorry to say this, but during the cold seasons people are looking at the outside instead of the inside. What I mean by that is, since everyone is usually bundled up, they probably won’t be looking at your complete outfit, they’ll be looking at solely your coat. I believe that your coat(s) should make a statement and represent your style. If you’re someone like me whose style is changing everyday, that means you have a lot of coats. If you’ve been wearing the same black or brown coat for the past decade, I suggest you donate it to your local coat drive and upgrade. Coats, jackets, and parkas can be expensive, so if you’re not ready to invest in a new coat, try going to your local thrift or consignment shop. During the winter, thrifts store are the best for stocking up on grandpa sweaters and jackets. If you’re completely lost, you can shop my favorite jackets up above.

Peace & Love,

Ivy Coco

I am so happy that more and more makeup companies are creating a copious amount of makeup shades for women of color. For a very long time women of color, especially BLACK women have suffered when it comes to finding the right shade of makeup. Obviously beauty comes in all shades and tones, but it’s hard to say that when makeup brands don’t shed light on darker skin tones. Women of color who are models, celebrities, or entertainers are always asked to bring their own foundation to set because some makeup artist and makeup brands don’t carry their shade.

Let me tell y’all a little story! So one day, I got booked to walk in New York Bridal Week. I was so excited and thrilled because it was my first runway show. On the day of the show, I had a 7 A.M. call time and I was running late. I usually like to put a little foundation on when I leave the house but on this day, I did not have time. I decided to drop my foundation in my bag and put a little pep in my step to catch the subway. I arrived at 7:03 A.M. and I was the last one to arrive, so that kind of made me a little upset (I hate being late!). As I waited for my time in the makeup chair, I began looking at all the other models and I only saw two other blacks girls and they were darker than me. I sat in the makeup chair and I closed my eyes for about 10 minutes and once I opened my eyes, I looked like a pale geisha. I mean I really looked PALE AF! My make up was awful. I scrambled backstage to find the other black girls and they did their own makeup. That experience definitely taught me to ALWAYS be prepared.

It’s so annoying that mainstream makeup isn’t always looking out for the black girls and the women of color. Thanks to CoverFX, they have a range of foundations and powders dedicated to darker women. When it comes to setting powders, I don’t always like wearing banana powder because sometimes I feel I look a little yellow. I recently tried the Cover FX Perfect Setting Powder which gives my makeup a flawless finish. The powder ranges from fair to deep and when I mean deep, I mean DEEP! I highly suggest going to your nearest Sephora to test out which powder sets best on your skin tone.

One thing that I detest during fall and winter is DRY SKIN! Every year I try my hardest to avoid dry skin because it causes my makeup to separate and look crackly. I’ve always used a sunscreen to moisturize my face before applying my makeup but this autumn I think I found my holy grail when it’s comes to makeup separation. I finally invested the time to find a hydrating primer and CoverFX has answered my prayers. After I apply my  sunscreen, I apply my Calming Primer.  I like this primer because it’s great for sensitive skin. If you’re like me, I suffer from hives and mild eczema. My sensitive skin is one of the main reasons why my makeup separates and this primer gets rid of my redness while calming my skin.

Lastly, when I finish my entire makeup routine, I love to spray the CoverFX Mattifying Setting Spray. I used to think setting sprays were a hoax but after a trial, I realized they actually get the job done. It keeps my makeup matte and together. I love a matte look because I don’t like looking shiny. In the summer, it’s cool to have a little shine to enhance your glow but in the winter I prefer my makeup to be all the way matte. If you guys and gals have any other winter makeup routines that you do, don’t be afraid to comment on this post.

Earlier this year, I made a BIG change in my life, I went VEGETARIAN! I come from a big Jamaican family and it was hard for me to give up jerk chicken, oxtail, and chicken foot soup ( I know it sounds weird but it’s sooo yummy!). A majority of people usually transition into being vegetarian by gradually eliminating red meat, chicken and fish, but my journey was quite different. I have been allergic to seafood for a majority of my life so that was easy but eliminating meats was a whole other story.

In March, I traveled to Dakar, Senegal, which was an incredible experience (CLICK HERE to watch my vlog). A majority of the food I ate was meat and during my two week stay, my body was not responding well to it at all. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted wonderful but I rather have a clean and clear digestive system. After longs nights of sitting on the toilet, I decided it was time to change the way I eat.  Since June 2017, I have not had one slab of meat and it’s been one of the greatest decision I’ve made.

I like to call myself a vegetarian with vegan tendencies. I say that because I only drink almond or cashew milk and I don’t eat eggs. Sometimes I have my dairy days by releasing my stress with a big bowl of ice cream, but I try to be a good girl. One thing I do use that is 100% vegan is my Natural Finish Foundation from CoverFX. I guess since I was changing what goes into my body, I wanted to change what goes on it as well. First, I fell in love with the packaging. It’s large enough to last me a long time but it’s small enough for me to carry on the airplane. Second, the foundation keep my skin hydrated. I’ve tried a lot of foundations in the past and they dried out my skin. Lastly, it is a FULL coverage foundation. I know a lot of companies say full coverage and they’re not, but CoverFX did not lead me a stray. The foundation doesn’t just help cover my blemishes, but it heals them. If you’re looking for a change in your makeup, I suggest taking the first step with CoverFX.

For me, autumn is all about flannels, leggings, sweaters, and leathers. Feeling comfortable in my clothing is a must, especially when temperatures begin to drop. I REALLY love fall because sometimes you get sunny days with the perfect amount of breeze or a day that is overcast and at the peak of the day, the sun comes out. COMFORT is KEY and what is more comfortable than a chunky sweater? I’ll wait…. Haha, I’m just  pulling your leg. The best part about chunky sweaters are that they are very inexpensive. If you’re not try to spend cash, go look in your Mom’s closet or your Grandparents (you might find some vintage goodies). Also, you could go to your local thrift store or Goodwill and find one between $5- $10.
I remember back in high school, every girl used to wear chunky sweaters  with black leggings. Why? you might ask, because they were comfortable AF and they still are. Now that my style has evolved, I’m still wearing black leggings (LOL), but they have a twist to them. I recently got these really cool tie up leggings from Windsor Store with eyelet Screen Shot 2017-11-03 at 6.00.54 PMdecor. They are very comfortable and cute, but I don’t suggest wearing them when traveling. The last time I wore those bad boys, they let off the metal detector at TSA which was very annoying. They are perfect for a fro-yo run, going out, or lounging around the house. They can be paired with a chunky sweater or a flannel, like how I paired them in the photos below.
Xoxo,
Ivy Coco
P.S. Don’t get comfortable in life, but when it comes to style comfortable is cute AF!
