“She’s built like an Amazon”, was my favorite line from the 1977 song Brickhouse by The Commodores. For a young a woman like myself, who was born in 1994, I might not know much about The Commodores, but growing up listening to that line in their song made me think of how incredible it would be to be a fearless Amazon woman. To me an Amazon woman is strong, brave, and a force to be reckoned with. I’m not sure if they really existed but they sure were dominating in Greek mythology. Myth or fact, I believe these women warriors triumphed over patriarchy to liberate the spirits of mother nature. Matriarchy was their existence, and it’s also a word we don’t hear often. Could you imagine living in a world dominated by women? Just the thought of that makes me think of the heart eye emoji. As I reflect on my 20 years of living, my world has always been dominated by fearless women; My mother, my grandmother, and the woman who raised me, whom I call Ms.Mae. These three women taught me how to win a war. I might not win every battle, but through their lessons and wisdom, I know I can defeat a war. They are my Amazon Queens, who stand tall against all obstacles, and are fearless of a challenge. Resilience is their sword, strength is their mask, and love is their armor. Together they raised an Amazonian Princess, and that Princess is me. So often, I see young women devaluing themselves for the acceptance of men, but I wonder if they stop to think about how deep their self-love is. One must love what they see in themselves to prevail. If there is something within yourself that you aren’t crazy about, then change it. You are the captain of your faith, and the key holder of your destiny. My best friend, and fellow Amazonian Princess is Sarahn Sankofa. In her blog, Sarahn Says, she states “You don’t need to sell others on who you think they want you to be. You just have to trust yourself. And as a result you will come to appear as everything you are, and nothing that you are not. As a result, you will inspire those around you, and discover another way to fall in love with yourself.” Her statement is so true throughout one’s life journey. Thank God I have her standing next to me on the battle field, because the people who you fight with, gives others a taste of who you are. Growing up in a world where I can be anything, I choose to be myself. The lessons from my Amazon Queens, are teachings that will allow me to become a Queen one day. I stand tall at 5’9, continuing to fight my battles, and each day I feel my strength get stronger and stronger. Like the Amazon Women, embrace your beauty, believe in yourself, and be your own hero.

– Sincerely,

Ivy Coco

“Trusting yourself goes beyond the consistency of your prior actions, it goes beyond who and what others have made you to believe you are. Trusting yourself is when you’re not afraid to question the questions. Trusting yourself is when you celebrate the power you have to decide.”
